thank you Red Queen Victoria ! I wonder....what does a class action suit need to go forward -- a legal eagle and other defenders of our right to deny the pirates and polluters of our land and cyber space ?
Fair use only covers 10%. If more than 10% is used then it's no longer fair use. That was in my 101 class, first year of uni. I think the issue comes not because it was used but because they were sourced from a pirating website.
Absolutely wild that this is the world we’ve come to live in. My heart breaks for authors and artists who have had their work stolen by soulless corporations.
Thanks for advocating for authors and other creatives, Victoria. As someone who has experience working in tech, it is very typical of techbros to devalue the things they don’t understand. It they don’t get art, that’s obviously because art isn’t important, and a DALL-E image that has no soul and point of view is as good art as one made by an actual person (sarcasm if that wasn’t clear). They feel entitled to be able to create what a mere humanities person can because obviously they are smarter than them. My (conspiracy?) theory about why companies and some governments are pushing genAI and automation so much is so that people stop thinking as much and become more easily controlled and manipulated. When what you’re reading is what a machine thinks is art or news or opinion, you’re not challenged to think. Same goes for when instead of writing down your thoughts and ideas, you write a prompt for it to expand upon it. As someone mostly develop ideas while actually writing or typing, I can definitely attest to the transformative power of the actual act of writing. I know that’s not a revolutionary thing to say, but linking it for my previous point. Anyway, thanks for being a voice for so many artists on this issue.
Yep--all of my fifteen books are on the list, plus translations, and even the scientific papers I wrote when I was a health care practitioner.

Yes. 12 of my books were stolen. I appreciate this so much. This is articulated so well.

Thank you for speaking up about this Victoria! So disheartened about AI taking authors’ work :(
